Beyond the Challenge – Firefighter Continuous Professional Development (CPD) where it matters
As the UKRO continues on its journey of Advancing Professional Rescue, we are excited to announce two new products that will be launched in the spring of 2018. The UKRO eLearning Portal and the Large Goods Vehicle (LGV) Roadshow will offer access to rescue education at the heart of the Fire and Rescue Service (FRS) and partners.
For over twenty years the UKRO has used the Rescue Challenge Concept (RCC) as a platform to enable rescue professionals to develop, exchange information, and push the boundaries of professional rescue. More recently we have supported the Rescue Challenge with Education Workshops, providing the very latest information on equipment, technology and procedures.
With the landscape of the UK FRS changing the UKRO is supporting the direction of travel by adapting the way we operate. We will continue to provide the Rescue Challenge and Education Workshops, at local, Regional and National levels, but will also offer peer to peer education ensuring access is available to all rescue professionals across the UK.
The UKRO eLearning Portal is a standalone system specifically developed to our requirements.
The modular system provides detailed presentations designed by the UKRO focusing on aspects of technical rescue and trauma care. Each module will be accompanied by tools that support a blended approach to learning, which include aide memoirs, action or drill cards and links to other relevant information.
UK FRSs will be invited to sign up to the eLearning Portal and pay an annual subscription fee, with license bundles equating to £7.00 per person or less. The fee will also provide an opportunity for at least one Technical Rescue Team (Extrication, Water, Rope or Urban Search and Rescue (USAR)) and one Trauma team to enter the annual UKRO National Challenge to validate their learning within the RCC environment.
Steve Apter, the UKRO’s Chair of the Board of Trustees explains, “the UKRO eLearning Portal is another milestone in our journey towards our vision of advancing professional rescue. The eLearning Portal will provide the opportunity for every rescue professional in the UK to gain access to the most up to date technical information to ensure they are better prepared where it counts the most; on the incident ground.”
The eLearning Portal has a number of great features which include fully narrated modules, UKRO video footage and is backed up by a platform that tracks individual usages and success rates, with administrative right options so your development records can be downloaded straight to your own internal recording systems.
The second of our new products will see the introduction of our LGV Roadshow. This self-contained mobile training unit will allow the UKRO to provide practical training in LGV stabilisation and lifting techniques direct to you within your organisation or service area.
Dan Quin, UKRO Director of Education and Development said, “The LGV Roadshow is another example of how the UKRO is able to support the needs of the UK rescue professionals. Providing realistic quality LGV training has long since been a challenge for organisations and services. Our mobile facility will be able to assist in addressing this issue.”
The UKRO LGV Roadshow comes fully equipped with stabilisation and lifting equipment, adjustable under-run protection, modern LGV technology and can also deliver a scrap vehicle to a given training venue, offering the opportunity to deliver various LGV related practical exercises.
Further information will be available at the UKRO National Challenge 2017 hosted by Humberside Fire and Rescue Service in Hull. Throughout the national event, representatives from the UKRO will be on hand to provide demonstrations of the eLearning Portal and the LGV Roadshow.
