IDP Portugal.

Background

Following a request for assistance from Portugal in 2007 the IDP undertook initial discussions, research and analysis to identify the current position within Portugal with regards to the numbers killed and seriously injured as a result of Road Traffic Collisions. Following a remote analysis of existing resources, procedures and training it was found that Portugal was likely to fall within the Low to Intermediate category, this was later confirmed by a country visit which took place in March 2008.

From IDP research a clearer understanding of RTC training has emerged. It is clear that Portugal has established a foundation for training and operational expertise in road traffic collisions. Bombeiros from Aljezur visited the 2008 World Rescue Challenge in Cardiff to observe the challenge and meet other rescue practitioners and country representatives who have been involved with the IDP and WRO.

Next Steps

The next stage of this project is to establish a national perspective with regards to training and resource needs. At the same time discussions will take place relating to the establishment a national rescue organisation and rescue challenge capability. This will be achieved with the help of the UKRO’s IDP project manager, to Portugal, Gareth Davies and members of Asociacion Profesional de Rescate en Accidentes de Trafico (APRAT) from Spain.
